CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The man was only a few miles from where he had left Oliver Motley's body at the side of the road when he saw headlights glowing in his rear view mirror.

Darkness was welling up from the ground, hastened by the thick cloud cover and the trees crowding the road, and already there was a ghostly twilight to the world. They were the perfect conditions for him to slip away undetected into the night.

Or so he had thought, until he saw the vehicle behind him.

He checked the speedometer, saw he was driving twenty miles over the posted speed limit, and slowed.

Take it easy, he told himself. You're getting too jumpy. Nobody saw you leave the body.

It was not easy to calm down, however, not when the adrenaline was pumping through his veins. Had someone found it already? He hadn't made much effort to hide the body – he had left Motley fairly close to the road – but it was a remote country road, the kind that saw very little traffic. Besides, it was night, and the chances of someone spotting the body in the roadside weeds seemed slim.

Still, he couldn't escape the uneasy feeling that he was being hunted.

He glanced at the rear view mirror again. The other vehicle was gaining on him, like a hound nipping at the heels of a deer.

He thought about speeding up, but that would only make him look more suspicious, especially if the pursuing vehicle were a police car. Instead, he kept the speedometer at forty, a miserably slow pace given the galloping of his heart.

The headlights in his mirror grew, their gaze illuminating everything, leaving no shadow untouched.

Suddenly, the man realized he was afraid.

It was a familiar emotion, fear. He knew it intimately because he had been taught to fear long ago. It was a lesson that had been imprinted upon him again, and again, and again with painful regularity.

But he was not that same person any more, not that tortured boy wrestling with his demons. He was strong now—all one had to do was ask Oliver Motley. He no longer suffered nightmares. Now he was the nightmare.

Yes, the cold inner voice whispered. That's right. You showed Oliver what you really are, just like you showed the others. Why not show this person, too?

Yes, the idea had a certain charm to it. Nobody would expect him to kill again so soon, but why not, if the opportunity presented itself? He had already shown how good he was at it, and he just so happened to enjoy it as well. He would have done his work whether or not he enjoyed it – it needed to be done, after all – but the pleasure of witnessing his victims' fear was the icing on the cake.

I'd like to strike fear into this jerk's eyes, he thought as the vehicle behind him crept ever closer, blinding him with its piercingly bright headlights. I'd like to see his reaction when he realizes what I am and the power I have—more power than he could ever imagine.
